Your toenails shouldn't keep you off the trails, out of sandals, or on the sidelines of the things you love.
If you’re dealing with damaged, discolored, or fungus-affected nails, KeryFlex toenail restoration offers a realistic, flexible solution that looks just like a natural nail. And because the resin material is both durable and non-porous, it holds up surprisingly well to an active life.
At Wilks Advanced Foot Care, Southern Oregon podiatrist Dr. Jason Wilks applies KeryFlex to help people feel confident in their own skin again—from the hiking trails of Umpqua National Forest to splashing around Cavitt Creek Falls. Knowing how to care for your restoration properly is what keeps it looking great and lasting as long as possible. These tips make it easy.

How Should You Trim and Maintain a KeryFlex Nail?
Dr. Wilks shapes and files it smoothly during application, but ongoing maintenance matters. The resin material is durable, so it won't crumble with routine upkeep, but aggressive filing or cutting at sharp angles can weaken the seal at the edges over time.
It’s often best to simply use a nail file or emery board for trimming, and file gently to smooth any rough edges. Keep the nail at a moderate length, leveled straight across with only a slight rounding at the corners. Cutting too short puts pressure on the surrounding skin, while leaving it too long increases the risk of catching on socks, shoes, or uneven ground.
Will Your Shoes Fit Differently With a Restored Toenail?
KeryFlex creates a realistic nail with some thickness, but it shouldn’t feel painful or create pressure inside footwear. If you feel tightness or pinching within the toe box, that's worth addressing: pressure on the restoration might loosen it prematurely and cause discomfort. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Choose footwear with adequate toe room. A shoe that fits too snugly puts repeated pressure on the restored nail, which can compromise the bond at the nail margins over time. Look for a toe box that allows for more natural toe positioning.
- Avoid tight athletic shoes that compress the forefoot. Your KeryFlex nail can handle running and competitive athletics, but again, make sure you have plenty of room for toe flexion and extension. We can properly measure your feet if you're unsure about fit.
- Break in new footwear gradually. Shoes that rub or apply localized pressure on the restored toenail may loosen it sooner than expected. Give new footwear time to conform before wearing it for long stretches.
- Check socks for snag risk. Seams positioned directly over the nail can pull at the edges during activity. Seamless socks or styles with seams away from the toe area are a simple way to reduce that friction.
What About Nail Polish, Acetone, and Pedicures?
Once your KeryFlex nail is cured, regular nail polish and standard remover, even acetone, are perfectly fine to use. Pedicures are also an option, and the restoration holds up well through the process. We have more helpful suggestions for maintaining healthy toenails.
The one caveat worth mentioning involves UV gel polish. Because KeryFlex restoration is cured with UV light during application, repeated gel polish applications with UV lamps could potentially affect the integrity of the seal at the nail margins over time. When in doubt, ask Dr. Wilks what's appropriate based on how your restoration was applied.
Does Sun Exposure Affect a KeryFlex Nail?
Prolonged UV exposure may contribute to subtle fading or discoloration in some resin-based nail systems over time, though this isn’t a widely reported issue with KeryFlex. Any changes are more noticeable in lighter, natural shades.
If you often spend extended time in direct sunlight, we recommend general sun protection for the skin—including your feet and toes—though specific precautions for the restored nail itself aren’t typically necessary.
What Should You Avoid to Keep Your Toenail Restoration Intact?
A few habits are worth skipping entirely once a KeryFlex nail is in place:
- Don't pick at the edges. Lifting or peeling at the margins of the nail weakens the bond and causes the restoration to detach sooner than expected.
- Skip soaking for extended periods. The nail resin is non-porous, so your usual showering and swimming are fine. However, lengthy stays in hot tubs or whirlpools aren’t recommended on a regular basis, as prolonged heat and moisture can soften the bond over time.
- Don't ignore changes. If the nail shifts, lifts at one edge, or develops any soreness beneath it, contact us right away. Catching small issues early prevents bigger problems.
