Neuropathy Treatment

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so this is the perfect time of year to reflect on all of that for which we are thankful. The whole list would be long, but it’s hard not to appreciate the ability to taste the delicious food we’ll be sharing with our families and see the holiday decorations that will soon be going up around town. Physical sensations greatly enhance our ability to experience and enjoy this world around us.

If nerve damage has you unable to experience feeling in your feet, you can still be thankful neuropathy treatments exist to help with the condition!

Neuropathy is a term referring to nerve damage, particularly the peripheral nerves that transmit messages from all over the body to the central nervous system (spine and brain). Treatment for neuropathy has many different forms, but often serves to accomplish one of two objectives – relieve symptoms and manage whichever condition has led to the nerve damage.

These traditional neuropathy treatments include:

  • Medications – Mild symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, but prescription painkillers are sometimes used for more-severe symptoms. Other medications that may be used in treating nerve damage include anti-depressants, anti-seizure medications, and creams containing capsaicin.
  • Physical therapy – This form of therapy is sometimes used in instances where muscle weakness is due to damaged nerves and can help improve the ability to move.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – This treatment uses gentle electric currents to help stimulate damaged nerves.
  • Surgery – When neuropathies are caused by pressure from tumors, a surgical procedure can be used to relieve the pressure and improve the condition.

In addition to those other options, one of the newest developments in neuropathy treatment is MLS Laser therapy, which we are pleased to be able to offer you here at Wilks Advanced Foot Care. This state-of-the-art technology uses concentrated light beams—delivered at two different wavelengths—to relieve both pain and inflammation.
